SEOUL, South Korea (AP) – A prominent South Korean maestro plans rehearsals this week with a North Korean orchestra ahead of its rare joint concert with French musicians.
Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra said Monday that chief conductor Chung Myung-whun will make a three-day visit to Pyongyang starting Tuesday to rehearse with the North’s Unhasu Orchestra.
Chung is scheduled to conduct a performance by Unhasu Orchestra and the Radio France Philharmonic Orchestra in Paris on March 14.
Seoul orchestra officials say Chung concurrently serves as a music director for the French orchestra.
Chung initially sought joint performances by North and South Korean musicians but couldn’t immediately do so because of strained ties between the countries.
