Red Cross seeks $3m in Mozambique aid after storms

JOHANNESBURG (AP) – The international Red Cross is asking for nearly $3 million to help desperate Mozambicans left homeless and hungry by storms that struck the southeastern African nation last month.

In an aid appeal Thursday, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies says two cyclones destroyed homes, crops and water and sanitation facilities. The federation is asking for funds to help 70,000 people.

In a statement, Americo Ubisse, secretary general of Mozambique’s Red Cross, says, “We have exhausted our stocks and yet our staff and volunteers are confronted with desperate situations in the field. Aid is needed now to reduce human suffering.”
