PHOENIX — Changes to the North Rim operations at Grand Canyon National Park are set to kick in Oct. 16.
The visitor center, gift shop, campground and entrance station will remain open while The Grand Canyon Lodge, food services, Canyon Trail Rides and park ranger programming will close until May 2019.
Park rangers are expected to intermittently visit the North Rim, but not as frequently as the summer season. Emergency and law enforcement officials, however, will be available.
While food services will be closed, officials are urging visitors to come prepared with food and water as necessary for winter driving conditions, which can become dangerous and change unpredictably during the season.
For information and lodging, The Back Country Information Center is open until Oct. 31. After Halloween, campers will have to rely on their own supplies for water.
For other visitors, year-round lodging at Jacob Lake is available 45 miles north of the North Rim. The South Rim and Inner Canyon Facilities will remain open all year long.
