Arab Spring shot wins World Press Photo award

AMSTERDAM (AP) – Spanish photographer Samuel Aranda has won the 2011 World Press Photo of the Year award for the New York Times with an image of a veiled woman holding a wounded relative in her arms after a demonstration in Yemen.
Jurors said Friday the photo captured multiple facets of the “Arab Spring” uprisings across the Middle East last year.
It was taken at a field hospital inside a mosque in Sanaa, Yemen, on Oct. 15.
The tsunami in Japan was another major theme of the competition, at which The Associated Press won three awards. In all, 57 photographers of 24 nationalities were selected from a field of more than 5,000 photographers, who submitted more than 100,000 entries.
Aranada will receive a cash prize of euro10,000 ($13,300) at a ceremony later this year.
