Sister says ex-Trinidad PM Manning recovering

Jan 26, 2012, 11:59 PM

SAN FERNANDO, Trinidad (AP) – The sister of former Trinidad and Tobago Prime Minister Patrick Manning says her hospitalized brother is recovering well from a stroke suffered earlier this week.

Dr. Petronella Manning says the 65-year-old former leader “seems to be defying the odds with the speed of his recovery.”

She told reporters Thursday that the stroke was caused by a blood clot that formed in one of the two artificial heart valves he had implanted in Cuba more than a decade ago.

Manning’s wife, Hazel-Ann, says he is speaking and has asked doctors if he can be sent home.

Manning served as prime minister from 1991 to 1995 and again from 2001 to 2010.
