Homeless veterans can now get free Arizona driver’s license, ID card

PHOENIX — Under a state law that went into effect this month, homeless veterans in Arizona now have the opportunity to obtain a driver’s license or ID card at no charge.
Those who qualify can have the $25 license or ID fee waived by the Arizona Department of Transportation Motor Vehicle Division.
“When you don’t have an ID, it’s really tough to get services, to try to apply for a job,” MVD spokesman Doug Nick told KTAR News 92.3 FM on Tuesday.
“So it’s really important that we do our part to help these veterans get on their feet and find a way to become more self-sufficient and be back into a place where they can get a job and get what they need to be a part of a working society.”
Other charges that can be waived as part of the program include those for a license suspension or revokation and the road test for drivers who moved from another state.
To be eligible for the waivers, applicants must provide documentation from a homeless service provider or the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs that verifies the person’s homeless status within the past 60 days.
The MVD will also verify the customer’s status as a veteran.
“MVD is really honored to be a part of any effort to help our veterans,” Nick said.
