PHOENIX — A poll of likely voters in Arizona have given Republican Gov. Doug Ducey the edge over Democratic rival David Garcia in the fall general election.

Phoenix-based Data Orbital’s poll, released Monday, put the incumbent ahead of Garcia, 48 percent to 41 percent, based on a survey of 550 respondents taken Sept. 4-6.

Undecideds made up 7.9 percent.

Libertarian candidate Barry Hess had 1.6 percent.

“These numbers indicate that even with high enthusiasm from Democrats, Governor Ducey still holds a comfortable lead,” Data Orbital president George Khalaf said in a statement.

Ducey and Garcia easily won their Aug. 28 primaries.

Poll participants were asked if they had to vote now, whom would they choose. Nearly 34 percent described themselves as moderates. Strong conservatives were next at 24 percent.

A July poll from Gravis Marketing had Garcia ahead, 42 percent to 41 percent.

More than half of Data Orbital’s poll were women, at 52 percent.

In other breakdowns, the biggest group overall was 65 and older at 35 percent.

A majority of the calls were made to landlines. The poll’s margin of error was plus-minus 4 percent.

The general election is scheduled for Nov. 6.

Ducey and Garcia could debate at least twice this month, the first set for Sept. 24 in Phoenix.

Garcia challenged Ducey to three televised debates — one each in Phoenix, Tucson and Yuma — before the incumbent committed to two.
