PHOENIX – The Mayo Clinic in Phoenix, rated as one of the best hospitals in the country, is doubling the size of its campus.

The hospital unveiled its $648 million Arizona Forward Project at the northeast Phoenix facility this week.

“It will add 1.4 million square feet of clinical space, including 94 hospital beds, five operating rooms, expanded emergency department and much-needed infrastructure, like cafeteria space and parking structures,” Dr. Wyatt Decker, CEO of Mayo Clinic in Arizona, told KTAR News 92.3 FM on Wednesday.

The expansion at the campus off 56th Street south of the Loop 101 Pima Freeway was expected to create nearly 2,000 jobs in the next decade, including more than 200 for physicians and scientists.

“We have teams working on the designs right now, and we expect that over the next eight to 10 months we will begin breaking ground,” Decker said.

Decker said the Mayo Clinic saw 120,000 patients from 70 countries last year in around 500,000 hospital visits, and the facility is the nation’s fifth-largest solid organ transplant center.

“What we have seen is a tremendous demand for our services to the point where we can’t accommodate as many patients as we would like to,” he said. “So as we continue to grow, we’ll be able to see a greater volume of people from the area, from the state of Arizona, as well as nationally and internationally.”

Last month, U.S. News and World Reports rated the Phoenix Mayo Clinic as the best medical center in the state and the 11th best in the country.

“We’re very proud of the services we provide,” Decker said. “Patients today get an amazing experience with the best outcomes in the United States, and they’ll continue to have that experience. But we’ll be able to grow and offer that to more people.”
