PHOENIX — With plenty of time to spare, a Kickstarter campaign to fund a huge mural in Scottsdale honoring late U.S. Sen. John McCain has reached its goal.

The fundraising effort to create “The Maverick Mural” hit its target of $20,000 on Tuesday, two days after McCain was buried at U.S. Naval Academy Cemetery in Annapolis, Maryland.

The campaign was launched Aug. 18, one week before the longtime Republican senator from Arizona died of brain cancer at age 81.

For the pledges to be collected, the fundraiser needed to hit its goal by Sept. 17.

The mural was planned to cover a 30-foot-high, 120-foot-long wall on a building at 4235 N. Marshall Way in Old Town, near Goldwater Boulevard and Fifth Avenue.

The concept depicts McCain’s face in front of an Arizona flag created with approximately 30,000 icons representing the state’s five C’s: cattle, copper, citrus, climate and cotton.

The blue and red design, based on a portrait of McCain by photographer Nigel Parry, was created using a custom computer program.

The effort is a collaboration of Aaron Bass with Chen + Suchart Studio and Eric Marvin.

When the Kickstarter campaign was announced, McCain’s daughter Meghan tweeted her support of the project.

According to The Maverick Mural website, any funds raised above the $20,000 will go toward other large-scale art projects.
