PHOENIX — The town of Gilbert is holding a food drive throughout September in honor of Hunger Action Month.
The Gilbert Feeding Families program is organizing the drive, which will benefit the United Food Bank.
There are donation boxes placed throughout Gilbert’s municipal buildings, as well as the Chamber of Commerce and several local businesses.
The food drive website also offers a monetary donation option.
“The best way you can help is by giving us a donation of cash because for every one dollar, the United Food Bank can provide five meals for the hungry in Gilbert,” Brigette Peterson, vice mayor of Gilbert, said.
“We can show a little bit of Gilbert kindness by coming out and donating to the people in Gilbert that really need our help the most.”
Last year, the program raised 37,855 meals for the United Food Bank.
Suggested items for donation include peanut butter, canned meat, canned fruits and vegetables, whole grain and low sugar cereal, soup and chili, canned and dried milk, rice and pasta.
There will be special donation sites at the following locations:
• Gilbert Farmers Market, every Saturday in September starting Sep. 8 from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m.
• Power Ranch Farmers Market, Sep. 19 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.
• Gilbert Public Safety Complex, “Drop in the Drive to Crush Hunger” event on Sep. 26 from 3:30 p.m. to 6 p.m.
