PHOENIX — The Arizona Department of Transportation announced two left lanes re-opened south of Chandler on the Interstate 10 westbound almost nine hours after an accident caused a significant delays.
The Queen Creek on-ramp re-opened a little after 8 p.m., about an hour after the initial re-opening.
Three people — a woman and two young children — were killed when a semitrailer heading eastbound on I-10 between Riggs Road and Wild Horse Pass Boulevard crossed the median and struck three westbound vehicles, according to the Arizona Department of Public Safety.
The truck then overturned and caught fire.
The driver of the truck was transported to a hospital with serious injuries, DPS said. In addition, two other adults and two children were hospitalized.
The accident, which occurred just before 10 a.m., resulted in the closure of westbound I-10, causing a miles-long backup for traffic heading into the Valley.
Traffic heading out of the Valley on eastbound I-10 also was backed up, although the road wasn’t closed.
ADOT warned of long delays in both directions, offering an alternative route of State Routes 587 and 87 and Loop 202.
Even after part of the freeway was re-opened, ADOT said there would still be delays due to traffic.
An investigation was ongoing.
