PHOENIX — Before heading to Washington D.C., U.S. Sen. John McCain will first get a proper send-off in Arizona.

McCain will lie in state at the Arizona Capitol before being honored with a memorial service on Thursday.

The McCain family will be greeted at the Capitol Plaza by Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey and first lady Angela Ducey. The private ceremony in the Rotunda will begin at 10 a.m on Wednesday. At 2 p.m., the public will be allowed to pay its respects.

A number of speakers and wreath presenters will be present for the ceremony at the state Capitol, including Ducey, Sen. Jeff Flake, Congressman James Kolbe, Sen. John Kyl and Father Edward A. Reese.

He will be the third person in the last 40 years to lie in the museum rotunda: Arizona State Sen. Marilyn Jarrett was placed there in 2006 and Olympic gold medalist Jesse Owens was in 1980.

Shuttles to the Capitol were available for guests who wanted to park at the Arizona State Fairgrounds at McDowell Road and 19th Avenue.

On Thursday at 9 a.m., there will be a procession from the Arizona Capitol to North Phoenix Baptist Church.

At 10 a.m., the memorial service will begin with tributes read by former Vice President Joe Biden, Arizona Cardinals wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald, Tommy Espinoza, Grant Woods and Andrew and Bridget McCain, the senator’s son and daughter. Serving as pallbearers are Arizona sports figures Shane Doan and Luis Gonzales and Freeport-McMoRan Vice President Richard Adkerson, among others.

Valley Metro released information about detours for its bus and rail services Wednesday and Thursday.

Following the conclusion of the church service, McCain’s motorcade will arrive at the 161st Air Refueling Wing at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport at noon. McCain will depart Arizona for the final time at 12:30 p.m. as he travels to Joint Base Andrews in Maryland.

After McCain arrives in Maryland, he will be received with ceremony by Armed Forces Body Bearers.

The senator will then be honored on Friday as McCain will lie in state at the U.S. Capitol in Washington D.C.

A procession that will take McCain to the Washington National Cathedral is scheduled for 8:30 a.m ET, with the memorial service starting at 10 a.m. ET.

Former presidents Barack Obama and George W. Bush will speak during the service as well as his son Jimmy McCain and daughters Meghan and Sidney McCain.

On Sunday, McCain will be laid to rest in a private ceremony at the U.S. Naval Academy Chapel in Annapolis, Maryland.

He will be buried next to academy classmate and friend Admiral Chuck Larson.

KTAR News 92.3 FM will air commercial-free coverage of the Arizona memorial service for Sen. John McCain from 10 a.m. to noon Thursday.
