PHOENIX — Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said he will introduce a piece of legislation to rename of the Russell Senate Office Building in honor of U.S. Sen. John McCain, who passed away at the age of 81 on Saturday.

In a pair of tweets, Schumer said he wants future generations to remember the politician and veteran.

McCain became a U.S. Congressman in 1983 before running for Senate and winning a seat in 1987. He spent 35 years in politics, including two runs for president.

Called a “maverick,” McCain was known for breaking away from his party, most notably in his presidential runs in 2000 and 2008.

The building is currently named after Richard Brevard Russell, Jr., a former Senator of Georgia who served in the U.S. Naval Reserve. He was in the State House of Representatives from 1921 to 1931, serving as the speaker for four years, and the Georgia governor from 1931 to 1933.

He served in the Senate from 1933 until his death in 1971.

According to CNN, a Republican leadership aide said it would take time to research Schumer’s proposal before commenting on it.
