FBI taps 25-year agency veteran for No. 2 spot

Nov 5, 2013, 6:42 PM

WASHINGTON (AP) – A 25-year veteran of the FBI, Mark F. Giuliano, will become the bureau’s new deputy director, overseeing all domestic and international investigative and intelligence activities of the law enforcement agency.

As the second-highest executive at the FBI, Giuliano will join newly installed director James Comey in running the bureau.

In an FBI career that has combined work on criminal cases and terrorism, Giuliano served in 2011 as the executive assistant director of the National Security Branch, the highest national security position in the bureau. Before that, he was assistant director of the counterterrorism division. Since August 2012, Giuliano has served as the special agent in charge of the bureau’s Atlanta division.

Giuliano’s predecessor as deputy director, Sean M. Joyce, is retiring.
