PHOENIX — The monsoon season in Arizona has claimed a life.
The Cochise County Sheriff’s Office announced that a 77-year-old man died from drowning on Tuesday night after the car he was driving was caught in a flooded wash near the community of Cochise in southeast Arizona.
The man called 911 around 10 p.m. and said the water was rising and was halfway up the outside of his 1996 Ford Thunderbird.
The man stayed on the phone and said he was getting into the backseat as the water rose up to the dashboard.
Shortly after, the sheriff’s office said the phone disconnected and attempts to recontact were not successful.
First responders then found the man’s body inside the vehicle. They said the water was at least four feet deep and running strong at the time of the rescue.
The victim was not identified.
