PHOENIX – The final leg of new Interstate 10 access roads in west Phoenix opened over the weekend, completing several months of construction by the Arizona Department of Transportation.

All of the I-10 access roads between 51st and 67th avenues built as part of the Loop 202 South Mountain Freeway project are now open.

The last piece of the 2-mile, two-lane stretch to be completed was the eastbound access road between 59th and 51st avenues.

These new roadways “are going to restore access to 59th Avenue, and that’s because South Mountain Freeway construction involved permanently removing the I-10 on- and off-ramps at 59th Avenue to make room for this new freeway we’re building,” ADOT spokesman Dustin Krugel told KTAR News 92.3 FM.

During closures in the area, several ramps were reconstructed so I-10 could be widened to include ramps connecting it to the Loop 202, which is scheduled to open late in 2019.

The South Mountain Freeway will add 22 miles of roadway connecting the West Valley and East Valley. Construction started last year.
