PHOENIX — A fallen Arizona Department of Public Safety trooper who was killed in an on-duty shooting last month will be laid to rest on Friday.
The funeral for trooper Tyler Edenhofer was scheduled at Christ’s Church of the Valley in Peoria from 10 a.m. to noon Friday, the department announced. The department provided an online stream of the service.
The Peoria Police Department said in a tweet that drivers and attendees should expect heavy traffic in the area of 67th Avenue and Happy Valley Road from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
There will also be several restrictions and road closures on Happy Valley Road and 67th Avenue from Happy Valley Road to the Loop 101. There will also be restrictions on the Loop 101, the department said.
Edenhofer was shot and killed on July 25 while responding to a call of a man walking alongside the Interstate 10 in Avondale.
The suspect, later identified as 20-year-old Isaac King, was reportedly fighting with multiple responding officers, including Edenhofer, when he got hold of trooper Sean Rodecap’s weapon and fired two shots.
One of the shots killed Edenhofer, while the other injured trooper Dalin Dorris. Rodecap was also injured in the struggle.
Col. Frank Milstead, the head of the Arizona Department of Public Safety, said in an interview after the shooting that there were not any red flags raised involving how troopers handled the situation.
“At this point, there is no reason to believe this was anything but part of a very violent situation that went on,” Col. Frank Milstead told KTAR News 92.3 FM’s Bruce St. James and Pamela Hughes on July 27.
“We don’t see that anything was done incorrectly at this point.”
King had a history of mental illness, according to Milstead, having had taken medication for anxiety and depression. He did not have a criminal history.
Court documents said that King was under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time of the shooting. The court documents did not specify a substance.
King was charged with first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, multiple counts of aggravated assault, three counts of endangerment and resisting arrest.
He has not yet entered a plea. King was released from a hospital and booked into jail on Wednesday.
