PHOENIX — Cities are constantly growing. And with growth comes change — especially in terms of sustainability.
COMMERCIAL Cafe took a look at numerous locations across the country, ranking the top 40 most sustainably-powered cities in America.
The company began by analyzing how each city draws its power, whether it be biomass, coal, gas, geothermal, hydro, nuclear, oil, solar or wind. The cities were also scored on their CO2 emissions.
Another category the ranking took into account was transportation and resource use. EV charging stations and bicycle and walking commuters were factored in.
Not one, but two Arizona cities made the cut.
Phoenix was top dog in the state, coming in at No. 16, with a green score of 66.9. Tuscon wasn’t too far behind, landing at No. 23 with with a green score of 58.5.
A big reason why the two cities made the list was due to their low carbon emissions.
Phoenix also has 338 public charging stations to Tucson’s 98. Looking at where the state ranks nationally in terms of bicyclists, Arizona ranks No. 21, with Tucson earning a higher score than Phoenix.
West Coast cities were the clear frontrunner.
When looking at the data, only Washington D.C., Boston and Minneapolis cracked the top 10 when looking at the country as a whole.
San Francisco saw the highest green score among the 40 cities with 88.53, while New York saw the lowest score of 43.16.
