PHOENIX — Officials with the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office said a woman allegedly shot a suspect in self-defense after she said the man parked in her driveway and attempted to enter her home.
Sgt. Joaquin Enriquez with the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office told KTAR News 92.3 FM that the woman called 911 around 11 p.m. Thursday to report a suspicious vehicle in the driveway of her Litchfield Park home.
The woman, who was not identified, told a dispatcher that she could see a male inside the vehicle but did not know who he was.
The woman said the male, who was also not identified, eventually approached the front door and attempted to enter her home.
The woman said she told the suspect that she was armed before shooting him through the door once he again tried to enter the home.
Deputies with the sheriff’s office eventually arrived at the home and began rendering first aid until fire personnel arrived.
The suspect was transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries. Enriquez said he remains in critical condition.
Enriquez said the man lives in the neighborhood and tried to enter what he thought was his home. They are still investigating whether drugs or alcohol were a factor.
The case will be turned over to the county attorney’s office after the investigation is concluded to determine whether charges will be made against the homeowner.
Enriquez said the public should not be concerned, as this was not a home invasion and there were no other suspects outstanding.
An investigation was ongoing.
