PHOENIX — University of Arizona fans will soon be able to sip a cold one while watching their Wildcats score touchdowns, as the university recently announced it would offer beer and wine in the Arizona Stadium.

The beer and wine sales will be offered to fans of legal drinking age starting with the Wildcats’ opening football game against Brigham Young University on Sept. 1.

Fans can purchase alcohol starting 90 minutes before kickoff. Alcohol sales will conclude before the end of the third quarter. They will be served in plastic cups.

Those who are of legal age will be asked to wear a wristband if they are drinking. There will also be increased security at the games in order to ensure that fans are abiding by the rules.

The move came after the university was granted an extension of premises for its existing liquor license on Tuesday.

Beer and wine had already been available to those with private club or box seats at football games and the general public at basketball games at McKale Center and at baseball games at Hi Corbett Field.

In a question-and-answer page on its website, the university said it began exploring selling alcoholic beverages at Arizona Stadium at the request of its fans and wants to be able to “offer the same experience to those of legal age.”

We want to hear from you.
