PHOENIX — An Arizona man said an opioid addiction was the reason he ran a fraud scheme that landed him in prison.
Kyle Dennis told investigators he targeted elderly victims with a telemarketing scam because of his drug use and to pay for personal expenses, according to a news release issued by the Arizona Attorney General’s Office on Thursday.
Earlier this month, Dennis pleaded guilty in Maricopa County Superior Court to one count of fraudulent schemes and artifices and three counts of theft.
He agreed to 7½-year prison term with the Arizona Department of Corrections and probation, the release said.
Dennis was accused of calling customers in 2015 to sell them web creation services, claiming his businesses were affiliated with Google.
Investigators learned he never provided the services but collected $590,820 from investors across the country.
One man was scammed out of $400,000, according to the indictment.
Victims of the scheme were located in Indiana, Washington, Colorado, Minnesota and Florida.
