PHOENIX — Fall is right around the corner, which means back-to-school season will soon be in full swing.
School-aged children will be running to their nearest Target or Walmart in hopes of scoring the folders, notebooks and backpacks that most accurately suit their personalities.
But not all of the children attending school this fall will be able to afford those types of supplies.
That’s where the Phoenix Rescue Mission is looking to step in.
The Phoenix Rescue Mission will host its annual Back-to-School Drive on Saturday in an effort to provide necessary supplies to hundreds of disadvantaged children.
More than 600 homeless and disadvantaged children in Phoenix-area school districts will receive back-to-school supplies, including backpacks, uniforms and books, during the event.
The drive will be held from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at Cesar Chavez High School near 43rd Avenue and Baseline Road in Laveen Village, Arizona.
U.S. Rep. Ruben Gallego was also expected to participate.
The Phoenix Rescue Mission partnered with the Division of Developmental Disabilities, Native Health, Cox Communications and Desert Financial to host the back-to-school event.
However, the organization is still accepting donations for backpacks, books, pencils, notebooks, folders, erasers and lined paper “to make the event a success.”
Those donations can be dropped off anytime from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the organization’s warehouse at 1468 N. 26th Ave. in Phoenix.
