PHOENIX — The Phoenix City Housing Department has received a $30 million federal grant to transform the Edison-Eastlake community into a mixed-income neighborhood.

“It will be all-new housing for low- and middle-income families,” Interim Mayor Thelda Williams said. “There will be new parks, all kinds of amenities, and they plan to clean up all the vacant lots.”

The Edison-Eastlake area, located west of 16th Street near Roosevelt Street, includes 577 outdated public housing units and several vacant lots.

The money was awarded to the city by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to improve a community with the largest concentration of public housing in the state.

The grant will be used to redevelop public housing and stimulate economic growth in the area near St. Luke’s Hospital. It will connect housing redevelopment with upgraded infrastructure and social services and will ensure that the Edison-Eastlake community benefits, and builds on, the local transit-oriented development opportunities.

Development plans indicate there will be new shaded paseos and cooling towers in the middle of one of the parks.

“We have a lot of nonprofit interest coming into the area and there will be a lot of new businesses in the area creating new opportunities,” Williams said.
