PHOENIX — Firefighters found a body after responding to a call for smoke at a west Phoenix home Monday morning.

When firefighters arrived at around 6 a.m. at the residence on Camelback Road near 67th Avenue, they encountered fire in the hallway and a bedroom.

“They also discovered a person who was badly burnt from the fire,” Jake Van Hook of the Phoenix Fire Department told KTAR News 92.3 FM. “The person was pronounced dead on scene.”

Van Hook said it wasn’t clear how the person died.

“Investigators were working to try and figure out why the person was still in there and how exactly (the person) died, whether that was from the fire or some other cause,” he said.

Firefighters were able to stop the fire from spreading to other parts of the house.

Nobody at the scene identified themselves as occupants of the house or family members of whoever lived there.

Van Hook said it was too early to to determine what may have caused the fire.

KTAR News 92.3 FM’s Jeremy Foster contributed to this report.
