PHOENIX – As the temperatures all across the state begin to soar, the Arizona Department of Transportation is warning drivers to take extra precautions before heading out on the roadways.

“ADOT is urging drivers to prepare themselves and their vehicles with this intense heat that we are having all across Arizona,” Garin Groff, a spokesperson with ADOT, told KTAR News 92.3 FM on Thursday. “Drivers will want to start by checking the cars to make sure they are in good operating condition.”

Remnants from tire blowouts can be seen scattered all across Valley roadways, most commonly caused by the extreme temperatures on the pavement.

But aside from making sure your tires are properly inflated, checking coolant levels, vital engine fluids and your battery are important measures to take to avoid a breakdown.

According to Groff, packing a cooler full of cold and frozen water is key when embarking on long road trips.

“Especially in case you have a breakdown, you really want to make sure you have lots of cold water as you wait for assistance to come,” Groff said. “Also, bring an umbrella for shade along with a wide brimmed hat and wear some light-colored, loose-fitted clothing.”

Groff added that making sure you have at least three-quarters of your gas tank filled is important, as it will potentially allow for the air conditioning to remain on and keep cool in the dangerous heat.

Regardless of the location, immediately seeking help after breaking down will reduce the amount of exposure to the outside elements

“Call for assistance immediately and do whatever you can to get into the shade to keep cool,” Groff said. “You can overheat very quickly. Make sure you stay really hydrated, make sure you are drinking that cool water until help can arrive.”

It’s important to exit the vehicle safely and stay away from travel lanes, as walking along the dark pavement even with shoes on can still cause discomfort. And for those who may be traveling with pets, ADOT says to make sure they keep their paws off the hot concrete.

Whether a short commute to work or long road trip out of town, taking the necessary precautions ahead of time will be beneficial in the event of a breakdown.
