PHOENIX — Arizona shoppers can expect to save money the next time they go to a grocery store.
Prices for some of the most popular grocery store items are down compared to three months ago, according to a new survey by the Arizona Farm Bureau.
The survey found the total cost of 16 basic grocery items was $46.90, about 2.5 percent less than the first quarter of this year.
“It’s more to celebrate as we come into the Fourth of July holiday, because prices are down,” said Julie Murphree, communication director for the Arizona Farm Bureau.
“Most of our meats are down, so that’s good for you and I when we go shopping for the holiday.”
Of the 16 items surveyed, the price decreased for nine of them.
The biggest drops came in the cost of ground beef, orange juice, cereal and sliced deli ham. Five grocery items, including eggs and white bread, were more expensive, and two items remained the same price.
“Families should take advantage of meat and cheese prices right now as they have the largest price decreases in the group of 16 items,” Murphree said. “Chicken was the only meat item up in price.”
The most expensive of the 16 grocery items was sirloin tip roast, at a cost of $7.39 a pound. It was the same price three months ago but sold for 63 cents a pound less a year ago.
Murphree added even though the total cost of the 16 items is lower, the year-to-year cost is still a bit higher.
