PHOENIX — Police shot a 19-year-old who pulled out a handgun and fired a shot on Friday evening, said Sgt. Mercedes Fortune, Phoenix Police Department spokesperson.
Chukwumankpam Mbebgu died in the hospital from the wound.
A little after 5:30 p.m. on Friday, three officers responded to the area of 4010 W. Colter St. in Phoenix. While in an alley, they saw a a man and a woman.
The woman ran toward the police and said the two had been arguing.
Mbebgu, the man, walked forward. Fortune said a 28-year-old officer saw what looked like a handgun, and Mbebgu confirmed it was.
He refused to give it up.
“During the struggle, the suspect pulled the handgun from his waistband and brought the handgun above his head and fired a shot over his shoulder towards the officers,” Fortune said in an email.
In response, the police fired back.
No police were injured. The woman who said she and Mbebgu had been arguing was not injured, either.
There were three officers involved, according to Fortune. In addition to the 28-year-old woman with one year of service, there was a 33-year-old man with 11 years and a 60-year-old man with 14 years.
