PHOENIX — A 17-year-old girl was detained after Phoenix police found two children left in a parked car near 19th Avenue and Bethany Home Road on Monday.
Sgt. Vince Lewis with the Phoenix Police Department told KTAR News 92.3 FM that two children — ages 4 and 8 — were left for about 20 minutes in an unattended car that was not running in the parking lot of a Target.
Lewis said the children were not injured, but were hot and “a little sweaty,” even though the windows were rolled down. They were not transported to a local hospital.
“We are happy they were not injured, but it could have been a lot worse,” he said.
Drugs were also found in the vehicle.
Police found the unnamed 17-year-old inside the Target with two other children in her care. Lewis said they were all family members.
Lewis said police are looking at recommending charges of endangerment against the teenager.
“It’s important to remember…[Arizona] is a beautiful state, but conditions inside of a parked car can soar well above surivivable limits in mere moments,” Lewis said.
“There is no acceptable amount of time to leave passengers in a parked car.
