Rattlesnakes get cozy in pool noodle outside Phoenix-area home

PHOENIX – If you thought snakes on a plane were bad, what about rattlesnakes in your pool toys?
That’s what one family in a Phoenix suburb found recently.
“This is the time of year where critters, snakes, scorpions might find their way into these areas,” Capt. Tommy Taylor of the Buckeye Fire Department told KTAR News 92.3 FM on Monday.
As a warning to the community, the department shared the details of rattlesnakes getting cozy inside a pool noodle that had been left outside.
When the floating toy was picked up for use, a large rattlesnake with a couple of smaller ones fell out, Taylor said. Fortunately, the snakes didn’t attack and just slithered away.
The department said it found previous reports of snakes laying eggs in pool noodles (not rattlesnakes, which don’t lay eggs).
“This is the first time I ever heard of anything like this,” Taylor said.
Taylor said the best thing to do if you come across a rattlesnake is to keep your distance.
“They don’t want to have any kind of confrontation,” he said. “Usually the only time a rattlesnake will actually snap at somebody is when they’re trying to protect themselves from danger.”
