PHOENIX — A new Arizona Department of Transportation service to help teenage drivers in the state get their learners permit more easily has been used about 23,000 times in three months, the department announced.

The “Permit Test @ Home” was first implemented in March to allow teens to take the written driver’s test online.

“To average nearly 8,000 online tests a month is phenomenal,” Jennifer Bowser-Richards with the department’s Motor Vehicle Division said in a statement.

Bowser-Richards said the online permit tests “effectively [create] another full business day for our offices,” since about 7,300 come through the MVD each day.

“That means fewer people in line and continued improvement of customer service as we fulfill our mission to get Arizona out of line and safely on the road.”

In order to take the test, parents must set up a free account on ServiceArizona.com, register their teen for the test and certify that they will give the exam fairly.

Since the test launched, a safety message has been added to remind perspective drivers about the dangers of texting and driving.

“Our No. 1 priority is safety,” Bowser-Richards said. “Having thousands of teens and their parents watching this important message is a tremendous safety education tool.”

We want to hear from you.
