PHOENIX — U.S. Rep Martha McSally (R-Ariz.), the first American woman to fly a jet fighter into combat, had a message for the producers of the “Top Gun” sequel: Include women pilots.

“You see how Top Gun really helped with Navy recruitment and inspiring people to come serve,” McSally told TMZ. “So they better have women because it’s great as a message to young girls so they can see, ‘I can be a fighter pilot, too.'”

McSally served 26 years in the Air Force before retiring in 2010. She flew 325 combat hours, earning a Bronze Star and six air medals, according to her website.

She is in her second term in the U.S. House since and is running to replace Jeff Flake in the U.S. Senate.

Star Tom Cruise recently teased the start of shooting for “Top Gun: Maverick” on Twitter.

The original “Top Gun” was released in 1986 and earned more than $350 million globally, according to IMDB.
