PHOENIX — The Arizona State Fair added another act to its 2018 concert series, Tony Award-nominated The Flaming Lips.

The trippy Oklahoma City rockers are known for their festive live shows, which include costumed characters, balloons, confetti and leader Wayne Coyne’s signature stroll through the audience inside a giant, inflated hamster ball.

The band received a Tony nomination for its contribution to “SpongeBob SquarePants: The Broadway Musical” in the category of best original score.

The Flaming Lips, who will play Oct. 6 at Veterans Memorial Coliseum, are getting to be regular visitors to the Valley. They appeared at the 2016 fair and returned in 2017 for a show at Comerica Theatre in downtown Phoenix.

Instead of giving out the 2018 lineup all at once, the fair is spreading out its concert series announcements throughout the summer. The Flaming Lips were the fourth act revealed.

Previously announced shows were .38 Special (Oct. 10), The Wallflowers (Oct. 11) and Sesame Street Live (Oct. 27-28).

The 2018 fair runs Oct. 5-28 at the fairgrounds at 19th Avenue and McDowell Road, with concerts each day at the Coliseum.

General admission concert series seating is free with admission to the fair, but tickets for reserved seats can be purchased for an additional fee.

Reserved seats for The Flaming Lips will go on sale June 22.

Tickets for .38 Special and The Wallflowers are already available, and the Sesame Street tickets will go on sale Friday.

Visit the fair’s website for more details.
