Firefighter injured, 4 businesses destroyed in Phoenix strip mall fire

PHOENIX — A firefighter was injured after responding to a two-alarm fire that destroyed four businesses in a Phoenix strip mall, the Phoenix Fire Department announced Wednesday.
The firefighter, who was not identified, was treated for heat exhaustion and was transported to a nearby hospital.
He was in stable condition, awake and talking to hospital staff, Capt. Rob McDade, a spokesman with the Phoenix Fire Department, said in an email.
Fire officials were expecting him to make a full recovery.
The fire broke out at a strip mall near 32nd and Oak streets in north-central Phoenix around 12:30 p.m. Wednesday.
McDade said the fire started at a small, detached shed that was behind the mall and spread into the building. More than 40 firefighters worked to put it out.
No surrounding homes were damaged by the fire.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
