Saturday, April 21, 2018: It’s an hour before closing time in downtown Phoenix and lots of people are enjoying a beautiful spring night at the clubs and bars.

Phoenix Police Sgt. Vince Lewis said two men were waiting for a ride on a sidewalk near Central and Monroe when a guy approached and started talking to them.

“That conversation turned when the suspect started using anti-LGBTQ slurs. Obviously the conversation became heated at that point then became physical.”

And the fight was on.

“One of the victims ended up on the ground,” Lewis said. “The suspect continued to assault him while he was on the ground and continued to use those slurs.”

That victim ended-up with serious injuries, especially to his legs.  Meanwhile, the other guy tried to stop the attack and the suspect punched him in the face.

The suspect made his escape in a pedicab.

Not only is this being investigated as an aggravated assault, but the Bias Crimes Unit is also investigating because of the slurs the attacker used.

The victims were able to help with a composite sketch of the suspect and what helps even more is that a nearby surveillance camera got pictures of him.
