PHOENIX — What’s better than a long weekend?
A long weekend with no freeway closures.
The Arizona Department of Transportation announced that over the Memorial Day weekend, there will be no freeway closures or major lane restrictions for construction or maintenance along Phoenix-area freeways.
But that does not mean there will not be any closures or restrictions due to accidents or other types of motorist issues.
However, the department is warning motorists to be aware of existing work-zone restrictions, which will remain in place during the holidays, and allow for extra travel time.
Expecting a heavier flow of traffic, ADOT will monitor three high-traffic zones over the Memorial Day weekend: Interstate 17 between north Phoenix and Flagstaff, Interstate 10 between Phoenix and Tucson and State Route 87 between Mesa and Payson.
Crews will stage equipment in these areas in an effort to respond faster to crashes and stalled vehicles, thus minimizing travel delays. The speed limit will also be lowered on the I-17 between New River and Sunset Point Rest Area during peak holiday travel periods.
