PHOENIX — The lights have been turned on, the kegs have been tapped and the projector has been whirring at Alamo Drafthouse Cinema Tempe this week, ahead of its grand opening.
The movie theater officially opens Thursday but staff and filmgoers have been celebrating quietly at Baseline and Rural roads since May 18.
Staff training days have offered up discounted tickets, food and nonalcoholic drinks at the dine-in theater.
The movie house also serves craft beers.
“Alamo is going to be a big, welcome change for the area, and we can’t wait to be a part it all,” owner Craig Paschich said in a June 2017 statement announcing the new site.
The second of the Texas-based chain’s movie houses in the Valley has been showing a mix of first-run movies and popular or oddball selections from the past.
New movies for the week included two superhero films, “Avengers: Infinity War” and “Deadpool 2.”
The seven-screen theater was also scheduled to show 1989’s “Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure,” which was partially filmed in the Valley, and “The Sandlot.”
The full opening will feature “Solo: A Star Wars Story,” the latest movie in the “Star Wars” franchise.
The other Drafthouse Cinema in Arizona is in Chandler near Arizona Avenue and Chandler Heights Road.
