PHOENIX — Officials in Goodyear said the city’s online payment system was up and running again after a cyberattack.

A spokeswoman for the West Valley city said in an email Tuesday that a new server and software had been installed, tested and deemed secure and customers could begin making payments.

The security breach was discovered over a week ago, after a customer who tried to pay for city services online called to alert them something was wrong.

The system was immediately shut down. It had been compromised from June 13, 2017 to May 5, 2018.

The investigation showed cyberattackers got around security measures and “skimmed” card information from the online system.

Customers who paid by the automated phone set-up or in person were not affected by the break in security.

“We understand the distress this breach has caused our customers and sincerely apologize for the frustration and inconvenience our customers are experiencing,” City Manager Julie Arendall said in a statement released a few days after the discovery.

Goodyear officials said all customers will receive a generalized letter on the situation, but only those whose information could have been compromised will receive a second letter.

The city will offer them services that include credit monitoring.

The investigation found no evidence that personally identifiable information was accessed, the city said.
