PHOENIX — Students are singing the praises of a Glendale high school choir teacher who was named this month’s honoree of Mac & Gaydos’ Pay Tribute to a Teacher, a program that rewards teachers from around the area for their hard work and dedication.

Amye Godfrey, who teaches ninth through twelfth grade choir at Independence High School near 75th and Glendale avenues, was selected for going above and beyond her reaches as a teacher.

For her hard work, she was awarded $1,000 as part of the KTAR News 92.3 FM program. She was one of four teachers to be awarded through the program in May.

“Everyone loves Mrs. Godfrey! She is a trusted confidant and friend to all of her students. She has opened the world of music to many students who otherwise wouldn’t have the opportunity. Even after her students graduate, they invite her to attend their college music productions, recitals and weddings because she means so much to them,” said Sarah Haslip, who nominated Godfrey.

“Recently, Mrs. Godfrey was diagnosed with breast cancer and she is currently going through Chemo every Friday after school. Other than losing her hair, nothing has changed: She is still energetic and eternally optimistic about her students, her health, and her family.”
