PHOENIX — More than $500,000 worth of drugs were seized by U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers at the Port of San Luis in southwest Arizona on Friday and Saturday.
On Friday, officers sent a 55-year-old man and his vehicle to an inspection lot.
Upon inspection, a Border Patrol canine discovered close to 35 pounds of methamphetamine, totaling almost $105,000. The drugs were found in one of the vehicle’s seats and rear door.
The following day, a 24-year-old woman was sent for additional questioning as she tried to enter the U.S. from Mexico.
A drug-sniffing dog was alerted by an odor coming from the woman’s Chevy SUV. Officers discovered approximately 113 pounds of meth, totaling nearly $338,000, and approximately five pounds of heroin, worth more than $86,000, throughout the vehicle.
Added together, the drug busts totaled close to $529,000.
The drugs and vehicles seized during the traffic stops were turned over to the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations.
The subjects were charged by complaint, meaning the charges were filed for criminal activity without inferring guilt.
