PHOENIX — Three students from the Phoenix area are among the 161 high school seniors named as 2018 U.S. Presidential Scholars, the Department of Education announced Tuesday.

Phoenix’s Seoyoon Kim, who attends BASIS Peoria, Peoria’s Lana H. Mohamed of Centennial High School and Phoenix’s Aditya Sivakumar of BASIS Phoenix were honored for their accomplishments.

In addition, those winners each nominated one teacher to be cited by the Presidential Scholars program as Distinguished Teachers: Lee Tran (history/government at BASIS Peoria), Mylynda Koener (English/business administration at Centennial) and Eric Clapeck (history at BASIS Phoenix).

According to a news release from the U.S. Department of Education, “The White House Commission on Presidential Scholars selects scholars annually based on their academic success, artistic excellence, essays, school evaluations and transcripts, as well as evidence of community service, leadership and demonstrated commitment to high ideals.”

The program was created in 1964 and has honored almost 7,500 students since then.

The 2018 class members are scheduled to receive Presidential Scholar Medallions at a June 24 ceremony at the White House.
