One dead after officer-involved shooting in Scottsdale

PHOENIX — A man was shot and killed in an officer-involved shooting in Scottsdale Saturday morning, the Scottsdale Police Department said.

Police responded to a report of a bank robbery at the Comerica Bank near Scottsdale and McDowell roads around 9:16 a.m.

“A white male suspect had entered the bank and approached a teller, displayed a firearm and demanded cash,” Scottsdale officer Kevin Watts told KTAR News 92.3 FM. “He was given that cash and then he made his way on foot out of the bank in an unknown direction.

“Within minutes, our arriving officers in the area located a subject matching that description to the front of the LA Fitness.”

When police made contact with the subject in the area of 1900 N. Scottsdale Road, the officer-involved shooting occurred, according to Watts.

The man, who has been identified as 51-year-old Stephen Charles Arthur, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Arthur was confirmed as the bank robber and was armed with a handgun during the incident.

Four officers were involved in the shooting, but none were injured.

Police have not said what caused the shooting to occur, as the suspect does not have any prior violent criminal history.

Authorities issued a hard closure for the area, shutting down Scottsdale Road from McDowell Road to Palm Lane in both directions for at least a few hours, according to Watts.

“The FBI is handling the robbery portion of the investigation at the bank itself as we’re moving through the investigation referencing the officer-involved shooting,” Watts said.
