PHOENIX — Tempe Town Lake boaters will be able to access almost a half mile more of the water for rowing, kayaking and standup paddleboarding, the city announced Friday.
The length of the lake will remain the same.
Crews removed eastern buoys – often called Tic Tacs – from the lake.
“The eastern, upstream buoy line was simply no longer necessary for public safety, based on findings of the 2017 engineering safety and local evaluation,” the release stated.
This summer, the western buoy line will be moved closer to Tempe Center for the Arts and the Elmore Pedestrian Bridge. By extending the lake, more water events such as triathlons or rowing regattas could be possible without interrupting other boaters.
“By extending the lake we are increasing the opportunities for recreation and more people enjoying what Tempe Town Lake has to offer,” senior boating coordinator Alicia Jerger said.
