PHOENIX — The Arizona Game and Fish Department began accepting paper applications for Fall 2018 hunts.

Paper applications for 2018 permit-tag hunts will be issued through a draw process for deer, fall turkey, fall javelina, bighorn sheep, fall bison and pheasant.

All paper applications must be received by 7 p.m. on May 8. Online applications are also available through June 12.

Applications cost $13 for residents and $15 for non-residents.

The drawing system for the applications are completed by random. However, applying for certain species gives applicants a better chance of securing a permit than others.

According to data from the Game and Fish Department, draw rates are relatively favorable for deer, javelina and turkey, while it is more competitive for bighorn sheep and bison.

Arizona also began to implement a bonus point system in 1999. Under the system, applicants who are unsuccessful in receiving a permit will get a bonus point added to future applications, giving them another chance at the drawing and receiving a permit.

There are also certain species like elk and pronghorn antelope have over-the-counter hunting tags rather than the drawing system. However, these tags have specific limitations that need to be considered, including location.

More information on over-the-counter tags can be found on the department’s website.
