PHOENIX — The Arizona Department of Transportation announced it had reopened the I-10 near 51st and 59th avenues ahead of schedule, while other closures continued on parts of Interstate 17 and State Route 51 over the weekend.

ADOT crews started working Friday with a 100-foot crane to remove temporary structures used to support a concrete structure, or straddle bent, for a future flyover bridge that will connect the South Mountain freeway.

On Saturday, ADOT announced it had completed that phase of construction.

A second closure is scheduled to take place in May.

ADOT also announced additional restrictions to Phoenix freeways starting Friday.

– Westbound I-10 will be closed between 51st and 59th avenues for construction on the Loop 202 South Mountain Freeway interchange from 10 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday. Westbound I-10 on-ramps at 35th and 43rd avenues will also be closed. Drivers heading westbound on I-10 exiting at 51st Avenue should take McDowell Road and connect with I-10 at 59th Avenue. Heavy delays and traffic are expected.

–  Northbound State Route 51 will be narrowed to two lanes between Glendale and Northern avenues on Saturday from 5 a.m. to 5 p.m. for pavement improvement work. The northbound SR-51 on-ramp at Glendale Aveneue and the northbound off- and on-ramps at Northern Avenue will be closed. Drivers should consider taking Loop 101 or Interstate 17 to get to the north Valley.

– Southbound I-17 off-ramp at Grant Street/Buckeye Road will be closed from 5 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday for utility work. The southbound I-17 frontage road will also be restricted near Grant Street. Drivers should consider using nearby southbound I-17 exits to avoid delays.
