Woman walking on freeway killed, DPS shuts down interstate near Phoenix

PHOENIX — A woman on foot was killed on eastbound Interstate 10 outside of Phoenix late Sunday, authorities said, closing the roadway well into Monday for the investigation.

A spokesman for the Arizona Department of Public Safety said the body of Yvette Marie Gills, 22, of Gilbert, was found on a shoulder of the freeway near milepost 216 close to Eloy in Pinal County.

There were no cars involved in an accident at the scene, authorities said, but witnesses has told them they thought the woman had been thrown from a car.

The highway patrol office said Tuesday investigators now thought Gills had been hit by a car while she was walking on the freeway.

The investigation shut down the lanes and sent traffic along a frontage road for several exits. The road was reopened around 8 a.m.

Eloy is about 50 miles southeast of central Phoenix and about 50 northwest of Tucson.

Information about the accident can be called in to the DPS Duty Office at 602-223-2212.
