Churro lovers and sheep enthusiasts alike will like this new Gilbert restaurant.
Dulce Churro Cafe is now open on Higley and Baseline. It specializes in personalized churros.
So what do sheep have to do with this pastry?
The website tells the legend of the churra sheep, an ancient Iberian breed from Spain. The churra was brought to the Americas in the 1500s.
These Spanish shepherds invented the pastries and called them churros for the similar-shaped horn on the churra sheep.
The fried food has gained popularity around North America and many Spanish-speaking countries. In Spain, it is still customary to dip churros in warm chocolate sauce.
Dulce Churro Cafe already has more than 2,000 followers on Instagram, where it displays different orders and the occasional sheep.
The menu show five different types of churros, including fat, looped and filled. Then, the customer chooses the dip. Options range from fruit to chocolate to cream cheese.
Then, choose a glaze: chocolate, icing or strawberry.
Topping choices include Oreos, almonds, sprinkles and marshmallows.
Finally, the customer can select either a churro bowl or sandwich, complete with chocolate, vanilla or strawberry ice cream.
If you don’t want any ice cream, no worries; the store offers solo churros with toppings.
It also offers Spanish lattes, featured on its Facebook page.
There’s not much more you can ask for from a churro shop.
Dulce Churro Cafe is open Monday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., and Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.
