Fatal wrong-way crash closes westbound lanes of Interstate 8

PHOENIX – Two people are dead after a wrong-way collision occurred in the westbound lanes of Interstate 8 at milepost 98 in southern Arizona.
According to the Arizona Department of Public Safety, two vehicles were involved in the crash located west of Gila Bend.
Officials said the collision resulted in the death of two people, though it was not immediately known what vehicle the victims were in. The roadway was closed to allow helicopters to land and transport five other patients to a local hospital.
I-8 was reopened early in the morning on Saturday.
The wrong-way driver was traveling in the eastbound lanes before crossing over the median and striking the second vehicle head on.
I-8 is the main highway used by travelers to Yuma and San Diego, Calif.
