PHOENIX — Two of the best public universities in the country reside right here in Arizona.
Arizona State University and University of Arizona ranked among the top 100 best public colleges in the United States, according to the American City Business Journals.
The Tempe-based Arizona State University came in at No. 63, while its rival in Tucson fell down the list at No. 95.
But both universities fell in rankings compared to the year before: Arizona State University ranked at No. 60 in 2017, while University of Arizona ranked at No. 85.
Not all public universities in Arizona performed worse than last year: Northern Arizona University climbed from No. 222 in 2017 to No. 208 this year.
Arizona State University also ranked as the best university in Arizona and the twelfth-best university in the west. UofA came in at No. 21 in the west, while NAU fell to No. 40.
The best public university in the nation was University of Michigan. University of North Carolina followed behind at No. 2.
The American City Business Journals, the parent company of the Phoenix Business Journal, has compiled a ranking of nearly 500 public universities and colleges for the last four years.
According to the Phoenix Business Journal, the rankings were first created four years ago to “look at the schools that offer the most affordable path toward a bachelor’s degree across the U.S.”
The rankings were compiled by “analyzing a vast range of data” and “using a 22-part formula” to rank 499 public colleges in the U.S.
