Texas waitress receives scholarship after helping elderly customer

Apr 4, 2018, 9:34 AM

A Texas Waffle House waitress got a scholarship to Texas Southern University after a picture of her helping an elderly customer surfaced on social media last month.

Evoni Williams, a waitress at the Houston-area diner, received a $16,000 scholarship to the university and the mayor of the town even proclaimed March 8 to be Evoni Williams Day after the post went viral.

“I got my own day!” Williams said.

The attention came after Williams was photographed helping an older patron at the diner after he asked if Williams could cut up his food for him.

The photograph was taken by another customer at the diner who noticed what was happening.

“I don’t know her name but I heard this elderly man tell her his hands don’t work too good,” the post read. “He was also on oxygen and struggling to breathe.  Without hesitation, she took his plate and began cutting up his ham. ”

The post, made by Laura Wolf, went viral. It had received more than 80,000 likes and 70,000 shares in the month since it was posted.

Despite the publicity, Williams still believed that what she did wasn’t completely out of the ordinary.

“I don’t know, it’s something I’d do any other day,” Williams said.
