Man sentenced for transporting heroin through Arizona for the cartel

PHOENIX — A man found guilty of transporting of 5,238 heroin pills across Southern Arizona has been sentenced to 14 years in prison, according to a press release from Attorney General Mark Brnovich’s office.
Sergio Ramon Chavez, 41, was arrested at El Con Mall in Feb. 2017, the release stated. After getting pulled over, he ran from the car and left behind a McDonald’s bag filled with the pills valued at $53,000.
Police found him hiding in the bushes of an apartment complex nearby.
Chavez told police that the cartel offered him $1,500 to pick up and deliver the drugs.
He was also convicted for aggravated assault in 2000 and child abuse in 2011.
